A well-known actress we know is suing a major movie website because when it revealed her age, she started losing jobs.My husband, a legendary performer, is currently being offered jobs for dying grandpas, and great-grandpas with Alzheimer's. Why? Because his age is more or less known, because producers feel if you're over sixty, you are old. (JC would probably do better if he gained 20 pounds and walked with a cane.)
So artists are concerned with age. There's Picasso's haunted looking self portrait on the left. Here's a little Shakespeare: "Friends, Romans, Countrymen," keep away from the numbers.
Keep away from any food, food supplements, pills, talk shows, advisers, therapists, knowledgeable friends, counselors, TV doctors, real living doctors -- keep YOUR BODY & SOUL away from humans who say, "At your age you should ... At your age your shouldn't ..."
Keep away from I should be earning a good living. That's deadly. Also historical summaries: At age ____other artists in my field were already established. Beware of "a person my age shouldn't wear...." Beware of "a person my age can't ... "
If you' trying to sell a book, play, or style, or painting -- or trying to land a job, or go to college and get a degree, or learn a new language, craft, skill, technology, do not think about age. Do not wonder if anyone else has tried -- AT YOUR AGE -- to become a famous, successful, income-producing whatever ... Just do it.
Watch out for age-cliches, age-rationales, age as a factor.
NEVER think at my age I need a flu shot, vitamins, must keep my weight down, exercise, walk, jog. It's okay to be aware of bladder control, but why am I forgetting things? why didn't I hear that? -- THAT will get you to conclusions about how often you need to see the doctor, the dentist, the optometrist.
See doctors if, or when you absolutely need to.
Also, if you're registering or joining something that asks your age, lop off a large chunk of years. If you can't lie, then skip whatever it is.
A world science panel recently said "Age 90 Is the new 50.”
I don't think 90 is the "new" anything, but if age 90 IS the number that says you are old, think of Betty White, 89, and Warren Buffet, age 80, and if you're actually approaching that 80's, don't utter, mutter, or murmur it to anyone, including yourself.
So what about celebrating your birthday. I suggest DO NOT. If you get birthday cards, get the return addresses from the envelope, and throw the cards out. You can't stop people from saying "happy birthday, " but a bunch of people singing "Happy Birthday to YOU!" should be studiously avoided.Aging is easy if you do the things I've mentioned above, carefully, discreetly and gracefully. If you can't lie, or avoid your loved ones, well ... you will age a little -- not a lot, if you wisely, carefully, cautiously keep eyes and ears open, keep on your toes, and steer clear of the pitfalls listed above.

Em, not sure if you know this... But in August, I celebrated the 11 th anniversary of my 29th birthday. That is my world. Lol.
You and JC keep warm and enjoy your Wednesday.
I can understand why a performing artist has to protect info about his/her age. But as an ordinary person, I have no problem with revealing my age to anyone. Because I look and feel young, I have to be reminded of my age at times, so I don't do something stupid (like fall in the ice).
Great blog Em-I learned a new word today-AGEITIS! Betty White turned 90-they had a big birthday bash on tv Monday night. I am trying to age silently and gracefully, disabled but able to still do a few things right. I don't think about growing old anymore, just about living life as I can and thinking positive thoughts with smiles and laughter. Live each moment with gusto.... kam
I do not think aging effects the soul. The spirit is immortal hence doesn't age per se. People start agreeing they are old & yes, they then think they are old. There is no proof a soul/spirit ever ages.
Society has huge agreement we "age". I guess you need to define "we." Bodies age but I am not a body, I have one and it is not old :-)
People have no right to insult anyone with their "opinions" regarding age. Those people are not being your friend with they evaluate for you and tell you what to think about your self or your body.
#KnowledgeIsPower!
I am proud of my age. I never lie about it. I also love birthdays. It has nothing at all to do with how I think about life. Mentally I am very, very youthful and yet I feel that its fun to be ___!
I am retired so I have no reason to worry about not getting things...in fact I do get things...I get senior discounts...LOL
Thanks for reminding me.
I shall remove my birth date from resume, again, because when one reveals an old age there, then he has already no chance to prove that his soul is young at interview
When there are many candidates for a job, they are rather eliminated than selected to be called for interview
I think professional in certain industry age is frowned upon, especially in entertainment, unless you're a huge star or being older, looking older is appropriate for the role. With regard to the actress who received less roles when her age was revealed, I think of Morgan Freeman (born 1937). His first credited film role was in 1971 (age 44). But he became really noticeable after Glory and Driving Miss Daisy in 1989 (age 52). I mean, for the meat of his career he's been an older or "old man", but it hasn't hampered his success.
I think in our communites and what we viewers of entertainers and celebs like to call "real life," we really value and praise one who has lived a long life. But where image is important, youth often wins out. Even in offices that have no basis in show biz, the younger, taller, thinner guy or gal often gets the push. Not only is not what you know, but who you know, it's what you look like.
The hell with em. Live Free and Die Hard, even in older age. Regardless, no one can beat the clock.
